Muazzez Ilmiye Cig,93 year-old sumerolog charged for veil statements
The prosecuting attorney is not pleased that Dr. Cig wrote that "prostitutes" wore headscarves during the Sumer Period.Prof.Muazzez Ilmiye Cig, the world's most renowned Sumerologist was facing charges for having stated that Sumerian women were the first ones to wear a headscarf in history.
Cig said: "Covering one's head existed before the Christian era, but that was not for religious purposes. It served the function of showing a woman's social standing. This is a historical fact. Now if I get convicted for this reason, I would never apply to the European Court of Human Rights. I would never sink as low as to accuse my own country."
The court clears Prof.Cig,however still sueing someone according to her thoughts is of real shame. The judge ruled at the first hearing of her trial that her actions did not constitute a crime.
trial is the latest in a series of prosecutions of Turkish intellectuals, including 2006 Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk and novelist Elif Safak. Charges were brought against her by a Turkish lawyer who took offence at her 2005 book "My Reactions as a Citizen".
Although many politicians states that Turkey is a democratic country, these intellectual trials shows that still we are 100 year beyond the todays democracy.Isolation, contempt,or being sued is the possible consequences of speaking your own mind.Glad that prof.cig got cleared but still our prisons are full of ppl who did nothing but spoke thier mind
